If I fronted a band, it would sound like Pavement, but shitty.

I have lots of favorite bands, and Pavement would probably never make the top, but I don’t know of another band I feel such a connection to. What bands are like that for you, Oppo?

Me love some Pavement. I connect to Isaac Brock and Modest Mouse though

I will not argue against Modest Mouse love, even if I skew more towards Danger Mouse. All mice are great

The Hives, The Smashing Pumpkins, Fugazi, and, even though it was a one-off, The Postal Service. My hypothetical band would have elements of all these groups and would be called The Blatantly Obvious.

I would listen to that band.

I’d listen to yours too.

Haven’t listened to much Pavement but meaning to, so thanks for the links! Someone once told me they were similar to Cake; don’t know how true that is but Cake is that band for me. There’s a bunch of Cage the Elephant songs that get me feeling right too.

I can definitely see the connection. Cake has that same sort of college rock sound, but I always thought of Cake as being closer to Beck. The only way I can describe Pavement is as the band you listened to if you were too cool for grunge. The lyrics are usually dumb, but somehow it perfectly captures that feeling of being a teen in the 90s and smarter than everyone else. But teens are dumb, so I guess that explains it.

This probably says a lot about me as a person, but Goya:

There’s plenty of bands out there who make angry music, but Goya’s one of the very few whose music doesn’t doesn’t reflect anger or hatred, it’s just kind of like a sad resignation at how disgusting people can be and how terrible the world is. I can dig on that and it’s kind of cathartic to hear such ugly thoughts turned into art, if that makes any sense.

If I were to front a band though, I’d maybe do something a little more silly and upbeat with some sweet booty-shakin’ grooves like Mothership:

or these dudes from this tiny little island in the English Channel:

Digging them so far! Heard Cut your Hair the other day on the radio and knew I had to give them a listen. A lot of Cake songs have dumb lyrics too but I love the instrumental pieces. This song is a great example,

Admittedly, I had never heard of Goya before, but I listened to it and despite not being the sort of music I normally like, I dug it anyway.

Cut Your Hair was their one mainstream hit.

I recommend Stereo as a follow up. I’m intentionally not posting the music video, because you have to like them first before you can appreciate how awful it is.

Thanks man! Love threads/posts like this. I remember my older cousins blasting this song when I was a kid.

It’s such a shamelessly blast-worthy song. I almost hate it, because the break is so consciously an awesome guitar break, but it’s too great not to love.

Glad you liked them man, I’d also recommend Electric Wizard and Sleep as good places to start if you’re ever looking for more of that particular style of music (stoner metal to be exact).

I didn’t know stoner metal was a thing, but it’s definitely my sort of metal, so I will check them out.

I couldn’t watch all your the videos you posted, but the pavement song that resonates with me the most is ‘In the mouth of a desert’. The epitome of slacker rock.

Right on, if you ever want any other recommendations just ask, I’m so deep in the scene that I keep Word documents dedicated to keeping track of bands I come across lol. Actually, here’s a list I sent to a kid I work with who asked for stuff like that, these are kind of like the more famous bands in that style: High on Fire, Goya, Electric Wizard, Sleep, Weedeater, Dopethrone, Year of the Cobra, Kyuss, Windhand, Cough, The Obsessed, Conan, Acid Witch, Truckfighters, Elder, Gates of Slumber, Bongzilla, Egypt, Neurosis, Crowbar, Eyehategod, Church of Misery
